Diwali Gifts That Won't End Up Re-Gifted
Every Indian home has one. The cupboard. Somewhere behind the good bedsheets sits a small tower of Diwali gifts nobody quite knew what to do with: the third box of dry fruits, a silver-plated bowl still in its plastic, a mithai box that travelled through four households before anyone opened it.
We've all given those gifts. We've all received them. And we've all quietly passed them on.
So this year, let's try something different. Let's give gifts that get used. Gifts that become part of someone's evening, their pooja corner, the way their home smells when guests walk in.
Here's why I believe scent is the answer. Of all our senses, smell is the one most closely tied to memory. A whiff of jasmine can take you straight back to your grandmother's hair on a temple morning. The smell of an oil lamp can bring back every Diwali of your childhood at once. When you gift a fragrance, you're not giving an object. You're giving a feeling they'll come back to again and again.
Below is my guide to finding the right one for everyone on your list.
The gift guide
For Amma, who has done every Diwali for everyone else
She's the one up at 5am making the rangoli, ordering everyone around and still remembering who doesn't eat onion. Give her something that's just for her.
Our pick: Roz. Fresh rose over smoky oud and warm amber: the scent of temple flowers and evening dhoop, poured into one candle. Light it in her pooja corner on Diwali night, and she'll think of you every time she lights it after.
For the host whose home you're visiting
Walking in empty-handed isn't an option, and another box of kaju katli will be lost among the twelve already on the dining table. You want something that looks considered and gets lit that same evening.
Our pick: the Majlis Gift Set. Majlis is the Arabic word for a gathering, the room where people come together to talk late into the night. The set pairs our two most-gifted candles, Oud Meher and Gul, in a box that's already dressed for the occasion.
For your boss, your clients, the people who matter to your work
Corporate gifts have a reputation problem. Most look like they were chosen from a catalogue at the last minute, because they were. A gift that feels personal says you pay attention, which is exactly what you want a client to think.
Our pick: Oud Meher. Deep, woody oud warmed with saffron, hand-poured in soy wax. It's our most opulent candle, rich and grown-up, and it fills a room with the kind of fragrance usually found in five-star hotel lobbies. If you're gifting a whole team, write to us about corporate orders.
For her: the sister, the best friend, the one who borrows your perfume
She has a dressing table full of bottles, but she always reaches for the same two. Give her a new favourite.
Our picks: Leyla if she's bright and breezy: crisp citrus and a little spice, settling into lily and soft musk. Noorh if she walks into a room and owns it: vanilla and saffron on creamy cashmere wood, bold and long-lasting.
For him: the brother, the husband, the father who has worn the same cologne since 1998
It's time for an upgrade, and he will never buy it for himself.
Our picks: Enaabh, our eau de parfum of French jasmine, black truffle and blackcurrant over a warm oud base. It's deeper and more unusual than anything on a duty-free shelf. Or, for the man who likes his home calm, Alarz: cedarwood with pine and amber, like a walk through a forest after rain.
For the person who has everything
Every family has one. Their home is already beautiful and their shelves are already full. So give them something they've never thought of buying.
Our pick: wax tablets. Little slabs of scented soy wax set with dried petals. They don't burn; you tuck them into a wardrobe, a saree drawer or a linen shelf, and every time it's opened, the fragrance greets you. Try Jasmine for a classic, or Al Saud for warm saffron and Arabian aromatics.
For yourself (yes, really)
You've spent weeks planning, shopping, wrapping and cleaning. When the last guest leaves on Diwali night and the house finally goes quiet, light something that's only for you. Zai, warm vanilla tonka bean over soft oud, is my personal favourite for exactly that moment.
Three things I've learned about gifting fragrance
Go warm for Diwali. Festive evenings call for oud, saffron, amber and vanilla: scents that feel like lamps and gold and late conversations. Save the fresh citrus for summer birthdays.
When in doubt, gift a candle, not a perfume. Perfume is personal; it changes on every skin. A candle is shared by the whole household, so it's almost impossible to get wrong.
Write the note by hand. Two lines in your own handwriting will be remembered long after the box is thrown away. Tell them why you chose that scent for them. That's the part that makes it a gift.
A note from me
I started Noshi because I believe the most beautiful homes aren't the ones with the most things. They're the ones that feel like something when you walk in. Every Noshi candle is hand-poured in small batches with natural soy wax and IFRA-certified fragrances, and every name comes from a word in Arabic that meant something to us.
This Diwali, I hope you give something that gets lit, worn and loved, not tucked behind the bedsheets.
Wishing you and yours a Diwali full of light, and a home that smells like it.
